IDENTIFICATION: We do our best to tag & track every plant, but sometimes things happen Sometimes our tags fade or fall off our plants and despite our best attempts to stay organized in our spreadsheets, one slips through the cracks. Sometimes a tuber is cut off the plant when digging, and an unidentified dahlia comes up and we have to ID it visually to the best of our knowledge. If a dahlia is misidentified, let us know and we will do our best to give you the proper identification.
When to Plant
Plant after your last frost date, once soil temperatures are consistently above 55–60°F. In many areas, this is late spring.
Where to Plant
• Full sun (6–8+ hours daily)
• Well-draining soil
Dahlias do not like wet feet — soggy soil can cause rot.
How to Plant
• Dig a hole 4–6 inches deep, 12 inch spacing
• Lay tuber horizontally with the eye facing up
• Cover with soil and gently firm
• Do not water immediately after planting unless soil is very dry. Water once you see some leaves sprout. Watering too early can cause rot.
Watering
Once you see green growth above soil, begin watering deeply 1–2 times per week depending on rainfall.
Support
Most dahlias benefit from staking at planting time. Adding support early prevents stem breakage later. Strong winds can take plants out so staking is important.
Feeding
Amend soil with compost before planting. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can produce leaves instead of blooms.
Cutting Flowers
The more you cut, the more they bloom. Harvest when blooms are nearly fully open for best vase life. Bring them inside, share with your neighbors, spread some joy!!
Fall Care
After your first frost blackens the foliage, cut plants back. In colder climates (Zone 6 and below), tubers should be lifted and stored for winter. We store our tubers in a bin of vermiculite, divided by variety. There are many methods for storage which you can research to find what's best for you.
Dividing
You can find lots of great videos on how to divide on Youtube. An easy method is just to split the stalk in half and pull off any damaged tubers. A tuber is viable if it includes crown material and a healthy eye.
